New York $3.2B AI Data Center Fire Exposes Safety Regulatory Gaps

A fire broke out in early June at the under-construction Lake Mariner AI data center in Somerset, New York, revealing local fire department's lack of awareness of the facility's safety conditions. Firefighters reported no active alarms, non-functional fire suppression systems, and three failed fire hydrants. Required safety documents were reportedly destroyed in the blaze. The facility is owned and operated by TeraWulf, with UK-based AI company Fluidstack set to run it. Google holds warrants for 14% equity and guarantees Fluidstack's lease payments. Computing demand from Anthropic and other AI firms drives the project, valued at $3.2 billion and one of New York's largest AI data center builds.
